Grease Zerk Fitting Identification

Grease fitting selection depends on thread style, angle, access, pressure behavior, and the machine point being serviced.

What the job is really asking for

A zerk fitting is small, but it controls whether grease reaches a bearing, pin, bushing, or joint. Straight, 45 degree, 65 degree, 90 degree, button-head, and flush fittings solve different access problems. Thread styles can include NPTF dryseal, 1/4-28 lubrication thread, metric M6x1, M8x1, M10x1, straight thread, self-forming, or drive fittings. A clogged check ball, broken fitting, stripped hole, or blocked grease path should not be treated as the same problem. The quote should preserve the point of use.

Selection signals to keep visible

The useful sort keeps the job, connection, rating, and consequence visible while the buyer narrows the field. Treat the table as a first pass, not as permission to hide the uncertain parts.

Decision Ask for Risk if skipped
Thread style NPT, metric, straight, self-forming, drive, old fitting sample Replacement damages the tapped hole
Angle and access Straight, 45 degree, 90 degree, button head, flush Grease gun cannot reach after install
Service point Bearing, pin, bushing, hinge, conveyor, loader, screen Wrong fitting is stocked away from the machine need
Failure symptom Broken, clogged, leaking, stripped, will not take grease The fitting is replaced but grease path remains blocked
Grease type NLGI grade, base oil, compatibility, OEM spec Incompatible grease is introduced

Proof that belongs in the RFQ

Quote quality rises when the request shows the work around the item. Photos, markings, measurements, and failure notes make the difference between matching a noun and solving a repair.

RFQ evidence Why it matters
Old fitting photo or sample Shows thread and angle clues
Machine point photo Shows access and possible damage
Grease gun symptom Separates fitting failure from blocked path
OEM lubrication chart Preserves grease type and interval
Quantity by machine Supports PM kit stocking

Where useful detail gets lost

The blind spot is replacing the fitting without asking why grease did not enter. The joint may be dry, blocked, over-pressured, or already failed. Another blind spot is forcing a near-match thread into a bearing housing because the head angle looked right. Fine and coarse metric pitches are not interchangeable, and a flush fitting may need a different coupler altogether. Many grease fitting threads need seal guidance that does not clog the check valve. A good PM kit should connect the zerk to the grease, interval, and machine point.

Where the site needs to pause

Pause when the fitting refuses grease repeatedly or the machine point is safety or production critical.

Pause point Responsible review
Bearing or pin will not take grease Maintenance inspection before continued operation
Stripped lubrication port Repair decision before fitting substitution
Unknown grease compatibility Lubrication program review
Critical hoist, conveyor, loader, or screen point OEM and maintenance review

GO4FORGE can organize evidence, identify ordinary product families, and prepare quote language. The responsible site, OEM instruction, employer program, code requirement, qualified engineer, EHS owner, or competent person owns the final safety and substitution decision where consequence is high.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all grease fittings pipe thread?

No. Grease fittings can use several thread or drive styles. Match the old fitting and tapped hole before ordering.

Why does fitting angle matter?

The fitting has to meet the grease gun in the actual machine clearance. A straight fitting may be technically correct and still impossible to service after a guard, bracket, or rotating part is back in place.

What if a new zerk still will not take grease?

The passage, bearing, pin, or bushing may be blocked or damaged. Treat that as a maintenance issue, not only a fitting issue.

Review Boundary

Use these notes to identify parts, compare the details that matter, and prepare a quote request. They do not replace the responsible site authority, OEM procedure, code requirement, qualified engineering review, or employer safety program.
